I Have a Normal Life, How Can I Be a Drug Addict?

While you may have a normal life – a job, a family, responsibilities, etc., that certainly does not mean that you can not develop an addiction to drugs. People don’t set out to become drug addicts on purpose and it usually starts out innocently enough. Maybe it happened because you took pain killers after surgery and you took them for an extended period of time. Maybe it happened because you tried drugs socially one too many times and liked it just a little too much. Whatever the reason, a normal life doesn’t mean that you can’t have an addiction. The important thing is how you deal with your addiction and fit a substance abuse treatment program into your life.

Drug treatment facilities will provide a customized substance abuse program that works for you. If you are a busy, working professional, an outpatient program may be a good choice for you. If your addiction is mild to moderate, outpatient services can be a convenient option because you can continue to live at home and keep your job while you go to treatment sessions at the drug rehab center. You will likely have to go on a daily basis for awhile and go through counseling sessions, meetings, etc., so that you can learn to live drug-free and gain the coping mechanisms you need to get clean for good.

If your addiction is more severe, you will still need to go to inpatient treatment but compared to the rest of your life, the time spent in rehab will be short-lived and well worth the effort you put in. Inpatient treatment can last for as little as twenty-eight or thirty days after the detox period, which is just a few short weeks to get through before you can get back to your normal life.

Drug addiction really can happen to almost anyone. Don’t be ashamed to talk to your family or friends about what you are going through; they can often give you the support you need to not only take the first step to get into treatment but also provide ongoing support to help you make it through to the end. Getting treatment is nothing to be ashamed of, as it takes a lot of will power and bravery to admit you have a problem. The sooner you get started, the faster you can get back to your regularly scheduled life!
