Is Treatment for Alcohol the Same as Treatment for Drugs?
When you seek treatment for alcohol or drugs at a rehab center, the steps are essentially the same. Substance abuse is substance abuse, whether you are doing it with alcohol or with drugs, so getting sober or clean from either will require the same type of efforts. While there are a handful of facilities that cater just to those suffering from alcoholism, the majority of treatment centers deal with both issues in the same manner.
What to Expect
You may be surprised to learn that there are no locks are on the doors at a drug and alcohol rehab. You can leave at any time you choose. Even in the case where you have been ordered to seek treatment by the court, you still have the option to leave any time. Of course, there will be legal consequences to face later in that situation however you can choose to leave.
The main reason for not keeping locks on the doors in drug and alcohol rehab is because unless you are a willing participant, treatment is not going to work. If you go for treatment thinking that as soon as you get out you are going to use again, everyone’s time and money is wasted and there was no point in the first place. If you decide you want to stay, you can expect the following:
Detox
Your first step will be to detox your body from the substance to which you are addicted. Many drug and alcohol rehab facilities do offer patients an in-house detoxification program, but others require patients to go through detox before entering their facilities. This means it is entirely possible that you will need to get clean and sober prior to checking in to rehab and possibly go through the withdrawal process at a specialized treatment center. Detox will typically be a short-term inpatient experience lasting up to about seven days. You may be given medication to help alleviate severe withdrawal symptoms.
The Facility
Each drug and alcohol rehab center is different. You may find yourself in a camp-like setting or something as luxurious as a spa/resort. It all depends on where you choose to go. There are hundreds of facilities to choose from in the United States, and you will have options based on either your own budget or what your health insurance company will cover.
Education
You will find that a large part of going into drug and alcohol rehab is learning and education. You will have to face your addiction in an honest way and learn new strategies and coping methods to help you stay sober when treatment is over. You will be educated about the realities of addiction to help change your attitude about using drugs and alcohol as well as what consequences you may face later if you continue to abuse drugs and alcohol.
Therapy and Support
You will also have many meetings, therapy sessions, and family counseling while you are in treatment and as aftercare when you have completed treatment. These regular sessions will help you stay accountable for your actions and help you deal with whatever may come your way so that you can put forth your best effort to stay clean.
It may seem odd that treatment for alcohol is the same as treatment for drugs, but the methods used by rehab centers have proven to be very effective for both.
