As you consider different drug treatment programs, you have probably come across outpatient drug rehab and intensive outpatient programs. While they are both outpatient – they have some distinct differences that should be taken into consideration when choosing the right treatment plan for your situation.

The Intensive Outpatient Program can be offered if a person has the right home living conditions and daily structure. This type of care is provided during convenient hours for the person receiving treatment while still allowing him or her to continue to function as normally as possible. Intensive treatment sessions are merged with the person’s life so as to allow the person to continue working or attending school and not put their life on hold for addiction treatment. Intensive Outpatient Programs are very effective for those who have very strong treatment goals, and who take their treatment very seriously and are fully willing to commit to ongoing treatment sessions. Those participating in the program will attend daily 12-step meetings, in addition to their treatment sessions.

Intensive Outpatient Programs are highly individualized because each person is in a different situation. Once a person is assessed and this level of care is deemed appropriate, they will get a treatment plan that will include skill based activities, group therapy, relapse prevention treatment, and a fully progressive treatment process. The treatment plan will be evaluated on a regular basis and restructured if necessary to maintain optimum levels of progress towards rehabilitation.

In some cases, if the person’s living arrangements are not conducive to the Intensive Outpatient Program, sober-living housing can be arranged. Here the patient will be transitioned into living in a safe environment that is drug and alcohol free that also provides structure that works with the recovery process. It helps those in this treatment program to put what they are learning in treatment into daily practice.

Outpatient drug rehab differs in that the treatment is less intense and often follows the Intensive Outpatient Program or Inpatient Program. It is sometimes the next step in the recovery process and continues to educate the patient (because knowledge is power) and to address any obstacles in the recovery process. Outpatient drug rehab is less structured and requires a bit less of a time commitment. This level of care works well for those who still need to remain functioning as normal during the treatment process but who also still need help maintaining sobriety.
